START YOUR MUSHROOM GROWING JOURNEY
Step 1: Choose Your Substrate
Select agricultural waste materials that are readily available in your area. Oyster mushrooms can utilize:
- Straw (wheat, rice, oats, barley)
- Wood materials (logs, shavings)
- Agricultural byproducts (coffee pulp, tea leaves, sugarcane bagasse)
- Garden waste (banana pseudostems, potato foliage)
Step 2: Prepare Your Substrate
Your substrate must be:
- Cut into small 5cm pieces
- Cleaned of dust and impurities
- Moistened to 70% moisture content
- Treated using one of these methods:
- Hot water bath (1-2 hours in boiling water)
- Hydrated lime bath (pH 9.5+, overnight soak)
- Bleach treatment (3-4 cups per 200L water, 4-12 hours)
- Cold water fermentation (3-5 days)
- Detergent washing (environmentally friendly soap)
Step 3: Inoculate Your Substrate (Spawning)
- Use spawn at 4-6% rate (6kg spawn per 100kg wet substrate)
- Ensure clean hands and work area
- Mix spawn thoroughly with cooled substrate
- Pack into your chosen container
Step 4: Choose Your Growing Container
- Horizontal trays: Simple, requires light management
- Vertical wall culture: Higher yield, better space efficiency
- Bags: Portable and inexpensive
- Bottles: For small-scale or gourmet production
- Columns: Natural-looking mushrooms
Step 5: Monitor Incubation (Spawn Run)
Duration: 7-10 days typically
What to expect:
- White mycelium spreading throughout substrate
- Substrate becomes colonized and compacted
- No fruiting bodies yet
- Watch for: Strange smells or unusual colors (signs of contamination)
Step 6: Initiate Fruiting
- Open holes in your container for fresh air
- Provide moderate light (not direct sunlight)
- Maintain high humidity (80-90%)
- Keep temperatures within species range
Step 7: Harvest Your Mushrooms
Timing: 3-4 weeks from spawning
How to harvest:
- Twist gently at the base
- Multiple flushes possible (2-4 crops per batch)
- Allow 1-2 weeks between flushes
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
- Moisture Control: Maintain 70% moisture throughout
- Contamination Prevention: Clean environment is critical
- Fresh Air & Light: Essential for fruiting stage
- Temperature Management: Keep within species requirements
- Patience: Rushing any step reduces success
